Costa Rican chicken meat company Pollos Don José has built its first single-stage broiler hatchery in Nueva Cinchona (Alajuela) supported by Petersime and Interagro. The hatchery’s yearly production capacity will reach 5.7 million day-old chicks. Pollos Don José is also already planning its next steps to expand the hatchery and double the production capacity.

Starting a challenging project

Pollos Don José specializes in the production of chicken meat, putting a strong focus on delivering the best possible product quality to the Costa Rican population. After having established its own broiler farms in the past decades, the leading chicken meat company decided to build its first own broiler hatchery. Pollos Don José asked Petersime to help turn its initial idea into a feasible concept with a high bio-security hatchery design and equip it with the latest single-stage incubator technology and a tailor-made HVAC system

On the question what made them decide to partner with Petersime Mr Alexander Sánchez, owner at Pollos Don José, answered: “Petersime’s expertise in building hatcheries in Central America is what convinced us to work with them. We know that Petersime delivers premium-quality incubators, but it was Petersime’s full project support and local support availability that was the decisive factor for us.” He continued: “The personal guidance throughout the project and the level of professionalism and knowledge from the Petersime team and their local agent Interagro meant we could rest assured our plan was in good hands.”

High-quality incubation using cutting-edge equipment

After locating a suitable site and finding the appropriate local partners, Pollos Don José and Petersime began a partnership to design and equip the new hatchery with the latest intelligent incubator technology. Petersime supplied the heart of the hatchery: 6 single-stage X-Streamer™ High Density (HD) 12S setters and 3 4H hatchers, including a hatchery climate control system custom-built by Petersime. Petersime’s local agent Interagro closely coordinated the project to ensure fast and easy communication with the customer. Thanks to the meticulous planning, the appropriate support during the construction phase and the excellent coordination of the import logistics, the installation and start-up were finished on time.

Mr Carlos Chávez, General Manager at Pollos Don José, appraised: “We could count on Petersime’s specialized technicians and incubation experts, as well as local distributor Interagro at all times. They have given us peace of mind by having a team of experts readily available to offer any kind of support we might need. We would like to thank the Petersime team for its well-coordinated and high-quality work as a reliable partner in this project. We look forward to a further fruitful cooperation.”

The hatchery has been running since December 2023 and the first results have already shown a great outcome with 94.22% hatchability (Hatch-of-Fertile). Pollos Don José is already preparing for its expansion with Petersime: The second phase of the Nueva Cinchona project will double the output expected in 2025.
